Our Prescribing Policy
Why we have a prescribing policy
Your safety is our priority. Medicines can be very helpful, but they must be used responsibly. Some medicines have strict rules under NSW Health regulations, and our practice follows these rules to keep you safe.
General prescribing
Most medicines can be prescribed after your doctor has assessed your health and decided they are appropriate for you.
To help us prescribe safely, please:
- Bring an up-to-date medication list to your appointment
- Tell your doctor about any allergies, side effects, or medicines from other clinics
- Book regular review appointments if you take long-term medications
Medicines with tighter controls
Some medicines have a higher risk of dependence or harm. These include:
- Strong pain medicines (e.g. opioids)
- Some anxiety or sleep medicines
- ADHD medications and certain stimulants
Because of NSW regulations, these medicines may require:
- More detailed assessment
- Regular review appointments
- A single prescriber within our practice
- NSW Health approval in some situations
This means we cannot prescribe these medications on the first visit, and we may not be able to continue them without an appropriate medical reason.
Lost prescriptions or early repeats
We cannot issue early repeats or replace lost prescriptions for controlled or dependence-prone medicines. This is for your safety and because of NSW Health rules.
Repeat prescriptions
Repeat scripts usually require an appointment so your doctor can check:
- Whether the medicine is still needed
- If your condition has changed
- If monitoring tests are due
Some stable, long-term medications may be eligible for a quick script appointment—our reception team can guide you.
Transfer of care or first visits
If you are new to our practice and requesting prescriptions—especially for controlled medicines—we will need:
- A full medical history
- Permission to get records from your previous doctor
- Time to review your case
We aim to keep your care continuous while ensuring safe prescribing.
We’re here to help
Our goal is to work with you to provide safe, effective treatment. If you have questions about your medication or our prescribing policy, please talk to your doctor orour reception team.
